Alopecia Universalis Onychodystrophy Vitiligo

Common Name(s)

Alopecia Universalis Onychodystrophy Vitiligo

Alopecia Universalis - Onychodystrophy - Vitiligo refers to a disorder that is characterized by a complete lack of hair at birth, in addition to decreased hair growth throughout one's lifetime, abnormal nails (onychodystrophy), and loss of color on certain areas of skin. Individuals with this disorder may be more susceptible to certain infections. This condition is often diagnosed during childhood. Doctors diagnose this condition if a complete lack of hair at birth and skin discoloration are observed. Treatment is developed on a case-by-case basis and depends on any additional complications from the disorder, such as recurrent infections. Doctors may suggest treatments to support the immune system, which is the body's defense system against infection. This could include injections of antibodies or other immune system components. Doctors also suggest individuals undergo phototherapy (exposure to UVB light) to fix skin discoloration problems.
