Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome, Mild

Common Name(s)

Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome, Mild

Androgen insensitivity syndrome, mild, also known as Reifenstein syndrome, is a condition that affects sexual development during puberty. Boys with mild androgen insensitivity are born with normal male sex characteristics. But because the affected boy's body is unable to respond properly to certain male sex hormones (called androgens), he may be infertile (unable to produce normal sperm) and may experience breast enlargement at puberty. Mild androgen insensitivity syndrome is much less common than complete androgen insensitivity syndrome and is thought to affect less than 1 in 100,000 people who are genetically male. Talk with your doctor if you or your child has been diagnosed with mild androgen insensitivity to find the best treatment for you.
