Anemia of chronic disease

Common Name(s)

Anemia of chronic disease

Anemia of Chronic Disease (ACD) is a type of anemia caused by inflammatory responses in the body due to chronic infections or immune system disorders. A chronic disease is a long-lasting condition that can be managed, but not cured. Autoimmune disorders such as Crohn disease, cancer such as lymphoma or Hodgkin disease, kidney disease, or long-term infections including HIV/AIDs, or hepatitis B/C can all cause ACD. ACD symptoms are usually mild and include fatigue, headaches, shortness of breath and headaches. Most often, treatment for ACD is focused on treating the underlying chronic disease itself. However, sometimes iron supplements may be needed to raise iron levels. Anemia usually improves when the original chronic disease is treated. Anemia itself may be a symptom of another underlying disease. Please talk to your doctor if you are experiencing anemic symptoms or have a chronic infection. Please also visit Anemia.
