Esophageal Cancer, Childhood

Common Name(s)

Esophageal Cancer, Childhood

Esophageal cancer, also known as esophageal carcinoma, is a disease where malignant cells form a tumor in the tissues of the esophagus. The esophogus is the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. In children, this cancerous tumor begins in the thin, flat cells that line the esophoagus. Symptoms of esophageal cancer may include trouble swallowing, pain behind the breastbone, hoarsenesss and cough, as well as indigestion and heartburn. Many diagnostic tests can be used to diagnose esophageal cancer such as an x-ray of the chest, a CT scan, a PET scan, or an ultrasound. While esophageal cancer may be difficult to cure, there are a variety of treatments available such as surgery to remove all of part of the tumor, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.
