Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1

Common Name(s)

Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1

Human T-cell leukemia virus, type 1 (HTLV-1) is a retroviral infection that affect the T cells (a type of white blood cell). Although this virus generally causes no signs or symptoms, some affected people may later develop adult T-cell leukemia (ATL), HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) or other medical conditions. HTLV-1 is spread by blood transfusions, sexual contact and sharing needles. It can also be spread from mother to child during birth or breast-feeding. There is no cure or treatment for HTLV-1 and it is considered a lifelong condition; however, most (95%) infected people remain asymptomatic (show no symptoms) throughout life.

Human T-cell lymphotropic/leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) Tax-specific T-cell exhaustion in HTLV-1-infected individuals.

Author(s): Ayako Masaki, Takashi Ishida, Susumu Suzuki, Asahi Ito, Tomoko Narita, Shiori Kinoshita, Masaki Ri, Shigeru Kusumoto, Hirokazu Komatsu, Hiroshi Inagaki, Ryuzo Ueda, Shinsuke Iida

Journal: Cancer Sci.. 2018 Aug;109(8):2383-2390.

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is caused by Human T-cell lymphotropic/leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1), and a higher HTLV-1 provirus load in PBMC is a risk factor for ATL development. Here, we document a significant inverse correlation between the function of HTLV-1 Tax-specific ...

Journal: Braz J Infect Dis. ;22(2):106-112.

Infection with Human T cell Leukemia Virus type 1 can be associated with myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) and other inflammatory diseases. Lymphocytes from about half of Human T cell Leukemia Virus type 1-infected subjects spontaneously proliferate in vitro, and how ...

Journal:

Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection causes adult T-cell leukemia (ATL), which is frequently resistant to currently available therapies and has a very poor prognosis. To prevent the development of ATL among carriers, it is important to control HTLV-1-infected cells ...

Journal:

Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a retrovirus that causes cancer (Adult T cell Leukemia, ATL) and a spectrum of inflammatory diseases (mainly HTLV-associated myelopathy-tropical spastic paraparesis, HAM/TSP). Since virions are particularly unstable, HTLV-1 transmission ...

Journal: Oncogene. 2011 Mar;30(12):1379-89.

The human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) was the first retrovirus discovered to be causative of a human cancer, adult T-cell leukemia. The transforming entity of HTLV-1 has been attributed to the virally-encoded oncoprotein, Tax. Unlike the v-onc proteins encoded by other oncogenic ...
