Leucocyte adhesion defect (LAD) is a very rare genetic disease that affects the immune system. The immune system is the body's defense against bacteria and viruses. An important part of the immune system is leucocytes (white blood cells). Typically, leucocytes attach to blood vessels near the place of infection in the body. In LAD, the leucocytes cannot attach to the blood vessels, so they cannot help fight the infection. Symptoms of LAD include recurrent infections, wounds that take a long time to heal, and an increase in white blood cells. There are two forms, classic and novel. For each form there are multiple types. Classic type 1 L.A.D is most common. Each type ranges in how serious it is. All types of LAD are caused by mutations in ITGB2. LAD if found to have an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern meaning the person with LAD must have two mutations in ITGB2. The only cure for LAD is a bone marrow transplant. In less severe cases, treatment may include antibiotics or a white blood cell transfusion. Always ask your doctor about the best personal plan of action.
