Lip and oral cavity cancer

Common Name(s)

Lip and oral cavity cancer

Lip and oral cavity cancer is a rare form of cancer characterized by abnormal cell growth in the lip or inside of the mouth. Cancerous cells in the lip and inner mouth can cause problems with eating. Additionally, abnormal cell growth in the lip or inner mouth can easily spread to the lungs, esophogaeus and stomach, causing severe breathing problems as well as complications with digestion. Individuals with this disorder may experience symptoms such as cold sores on the gums, lips and jaws. Doctors often diagnose this form of cancer early, since symptoms are apparent. Treatment depends on the stage of the cancer. To prevent this form of cancer, doctors often encourage patients to have a healthy lifestyle (exercise and diet). If the cancer has progressed, doctors may suggest patients undergo chemotherapy or radiotherapy to destroy cancerous cells in the lip or mouth.
