Webinar: Narratives of Heritability: Privileging Family Stories in Genetic Understanding
Source
Genetic Alliance webinars
Description
In this session presenters share the results of a two-year project on "narrative genetics”, the exploration of how genetic understanding and belief are expressed through story, and how these stories influence culture and society. "Family Stories" explores how mainly low income minority women understand and make sense of heritability in their pregnancy. This webinar discusses the importance to genetics professionals of having a perspective that honors the "stories" of clients and families, and explores the new perspectives as part of a larger movement to incorporate the value of narrative into our work.

Presenters:
Caroline Lieber - Director, Joan H Marks Graduate Program in Human Genetics, Sarah Lawrence College
Marsha Hurst - Faculty, Narrative Medicine Program; Research Scholar, Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy (ISERP), Columbia University
