Document Description
The target population at Brookdale Hospital’s Community based Sickle cell Project has a high incidence of sickle cell trait. The project educated parents of trait babies diagnosed by newborn screening. The Project also conducted outreach and educational sessions in the community. The knowledge of sickle cell was evaluated before and after education in each of these settings. The educational intervention improved knowledge in the parents of trait babies and in the community even though this education was in an individual setting for the parents and in a group setting for the community group. Recommendations for education regarding sickle cell in the "at-risk" community is stressed.
